F A S H I O N F A V O R I T E S: Spring 2013

Due to the fact that I wear a lot of vintage means that most of my inspiration comes from the clothing themselves. The era that it's made or the region that it's from definitely directs me to a particular look or vibe. But, during every fashion week I like to check in and see what the big fashion names (and some of the unknown ones) are coming up with. I love vintage, but what I love more is to mix vintage with modern clothing. So, this fall I thought I'd share some of my favorite shows and looks from the spring 2013 fashion weeks. First stop, New York City...

During every fashion week, trends seem to pop up magically. This season, I was noticing a lot of 90's  inspiration: exposed mid drifts, maxi dresses, plaid, and floral. OR maybe I just have 90's grunge on my radar and that's all I'm really paying attention to these days.... either way, the shows this season did not disappoint, but what really stands out are the ones that show me something I didn't even know I needed in my life. New inspiration. Here are my top faves from New York.

1. Mara Hoffman

 

Honestly, I don't think I ever really paid any attention to this designer before. There are so many designers, it's easy to over look some. But this season, Mara Hoffman pulled out the big guns with her modern take on ethnic bohemian. I love me some embroidered dresses and woven textiles, but the fact that she uses these vintage patterns and textiles with neon colors and semi- sheer fabric gives the whole look a completely new spin. 

2. Whit

I'll be honest, I felt a bit validated when I saw the photos from this show. This collection really summed up what I've been in to lately: crop tops with mid length skirts, platform sandals, pattern mixing, and tropical prints. And now, jumpsuits and zebra print shorts are added to that list.

3. Creatures of Comfort

Oh god. When I saw the photos from the Creatures of Comfort show I came to the realization that I needed to wear socks with sandals. That has never happened before. The name suites this designer brand because every inch of what the models are wearing are designed for pure comfort... that is fashion.


4. Custo Barcelona

This is not a brand I normally gravitate to, but they really hit the mark for me. Similar to Mara Hoffman, Custo Barcelona has a modern take on bohemian garb... but now we are in Barcelona, Spain and we're going to the beach. What I love most about this collection are the bright colors and pattern mixing, my summer go to's next year. The only other thing I need is a trip to Spain and I'll be set...





New York fashion week is actually over quite yet, and if I encounter more incredible shows you best believe I'mma post about em.  I'm about to go thrifting for more awesome vintage stuff this morning and now I've got a whole new list of ideas in my mind... stay tuned for what I found.

Fall Vintage Style 2013

With changing seasons comes new inspiration for the wardrobe. Personally, when it comes to fall, if it's warm and comfy, I'm on board. In preparation for the new season I thought I'd compile a list of my own personal go to items this fall. 

1) Old Man Slacks + Oxford Shoes

Italian Slacks / Thrifted Banana Republic Sleeveless Top / Tokio Kumagai Oxfords

For some reason, fall always gets me in the mood for preppy, polished looks. That is why my go to pant this season is slacks. The more grandpa-y the better. Naturally, oxfords are my shoe of choice with this look. Luckily, I found a pair in my size from another awesome Etsy shop (Viejita Custom Vintage). This pair was especially amazing because they have a cool cut out near the heel and they fit like a dream. It doesn't hurt that they are also made by designer Tokio Kumagai. 

To balance off the grandpa vibez in this outfit I paired it with a sleeveless Banana Republic linen blouse with a scalloped collar.

2) The Over-sized Sweater + Platform Sandals

Salmon Pink Knit Sweater / Levis Skinny Jeans / Bass Platform Sandals

A knit sweater with sandals??? That's cray.     ...What's crazier is that I'd rather wear Birkenstock's with this outfit but I don't own a pair as of yet. Why sandals? Maybe it's cause it's still 100 degrees here in the southwest and I haven't wrapped my brain around what "cold" is.   I don't really know why I'm into this look, especially since I hate pairing summer items with winter items... shorts and uggs for instance. Typically, mixing seasonal items just doesn't make sense to me, but platform sandals and sweaters? What's not to love. 

3) Denim on Denim / 70s Jeans

I'll be honest, this is more of a spring thing in my eyes, but I guess I'm just trying to get a head start. I love skinny jeans, but there aint nothin' like a retro pair of wide leg jeans...?. ....bell bottoms?...  flares? I don't know what they're called any more but I think I'll be sporting them this fall (and spring and summer).

4) Crop Tops + Skirts

Crop Top / Vintage Button Down Skirt / Bass Platform Sandals

Hey! This is turning into a summer wardrobe list...    Ugh, whatever, you can just put on a sweater over if you get cold. I'm sick of these "weather rules". The fact is, crop tops have become my number one thing to wear.  They are really comfortable, and they look good with high waist stuff, especially skirts. Especially vintage mid length, matronly skirts.

Those are some of my fall (ish) outfits, but the list also includes boat shoes (of the Sperry or Timberland variety), cropped button down blouses, leather bags, tweed and plaid. BUT, it's still early, and as mentioned previously, my mind isn't tuned to 'cold' yet so I could be singing a different wardrobe tune at any moment. Until then...

Leather Bucket Bag

Leather Bucket Bag / Black Cut Off Shorts / White with Pink Stripe Vest

I recently came across this item that I heavily debated keeping. Unfortunately, my annoying left brain kept nagging me to list it... so here we are... stupid left brain.  Great leather bags are hard to come by, especially one in such great condition and especially when it's in bucket form. Don't know what a bucket bag is? It's basically a bag in bucket form (open top) but closes with a drawstring. What's more handy than a drawstring? A handle. ...this baby has got both.
